BlackEaster eggs – Donja Dubrava –

Black Easter eggs from Donja Dubrava have many peculiarities – in addition to being part of the intangible heritage of Međimurje, the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia and delicate craftsmanship, they have a black background and regularly floral motifs. Today, in Donja Dubrava, they are made by only one family, the Vučenik family, and they used to be made only for the Sunday after Easter or White Sunday. Today, they are made as a beautiful souvenir for every occasion. Easter eggs are made using the batik technique, i.e. by applying melted wax to the egg shell with the help of a wooden pen on which a copper tip is attached.

Easter eggs are an integral part of the South Slavic custom of “twinning” or “sistering”. Two young men or two girls fraternize with each other and give each other Easter eggs alternately, saying the words “Sister, sister, for ever sister” or “Brother, brother, for ever brother”. From that moment on, girls and boys are called “written” sisters and brothers. The doors of the Vučenik family are always open to visitors who want to experience and try the technique of making black Easter eggs firsthand, and there are also souvenirs available.
